About you

About this role

We are looking for a seasoned leader for our Learning Science and Design team. This team’s mission is to serve as Udemy’s Learning Science Center of Excellence by defining the quality standards for designing and developing learning experiences. This leader is responsible for serving as an internal thought leader on learning and able to provide strategic direction for the future of our product. The team works with instructors and our product and content teams to create learning experiences which deliver the learning outcomes expected by organization, needed by learners to reach learning outcomes and essential for Udemy to achieve its mission. A leader of this function is expected to have a Learning Science background paired with experience collaborating with Product, Design and Engineering to build scaled learning experience products.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Set the quality standards for defining, designing and developing solutions steeped in Learning Science theory, best practice, and research
  • Collaborate across Udemy’s PDE teams to develop experiences on the platform that are founded in Learning Science through Learning Design Principles as well as other more embedded specialized efforts
  • Provide product strategy recommendations and consultations
  • Lead a team of learning designers that works directly with SMEs (either Instructors, through vendors, or AI tools) to make high quality content for new products, like Labs and Assessments, by developing quality guidelines, providing feedback through review cycles, and providing education on learning design best practices
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration to deliver successful products and/or features. We are a global matrix organization, and connecting the dots is a critical skill

What you’ll have:

  • 2+ years experience working directly with product teams to build and ship learning experiences with demonstrated high impact for millions of users
  • Deep product development experience utilizing learning science to make key decisions on strategy, scope, design and prioritization.
  • Curriculum or instructional design background, K12 experience preferred
  • Experience internally influencing and educating around Learning Science with a balance of knowing how to compromise when needed
  • You listen to what customers, learners and instructors say, think about what they actually need, and create products to meet those needs
  • The ability to grow and develop a team that understands learning science and can infuse the principles into a product development environment
  • Experience collaborating using common product development tools: Figma, Miro, Jira, etc preferred
  • MS or PhD in Learning Science Curriculum & Instruction or Education fields preferred
